The majority of feeds used to get news from a blog or news site to a reader, like Mozilla Thunderbird or bloglines are RSS  ( really simple syndication ) feeds. Microsoft states that it invented RSS and wants to patent the technology, but it’s a long shot and there are very much chances that it will remain free to use and unpatented by any company. That would be a good thing.
